Sobek

Sobek was the Egyptian God of rebirth, fertility and crocodiles who was worshiped up until the Roman age. His figure was a human male body with a crocodile. Sobek was said to be the creator of the world and was believed to have created the Nile from his sweat. Some regions of the Egyptian Empire worshipped crocodiles as Sobek incarnations, though in other places the animals were hunted and killed. Pharaohs were associated with the God because he was a symbol of power and strength. Often times Nile crocodiles were mummified and placed in royal tombs as protection of Sobek in the afterlife.

Sobek statue as part of the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers). The fountain features an Egyptian obelisk and representations of four Great Rivers sculpted by Bernini. One of the rivers represented is the Nile, which is considered to be the greatest river in Africa. Located in the Piazza Navonna
