Originally from the Mesopotamian area, the Lamassu is a creature
often known as the gatekeeper. They had human heads with the body of a lion and
feathered wings like a bird. The Lamassu has a female counterpart called the
Aspasu, which usually is seen with exposed breasts. Statues and painting of these
figures were places on either side of doorways to offer protection to the
building.
