The Green Man is mostly known in Celtic
Mythology as the God of summer and spring, although his image can be traced
back to Ancient Rome. In pagan religions trees and foliage were hallowed
because they were the symbol of growth, prosperity and rebirth. Also many pagan
Gods and creatures inhabited forests including Dionysus who was thought to be
the green man in the Greco-Roman period. The leaf-covered face is also found in
Christian cathedrals as decoration. Although a pagan symbol the green man represented
rebirth, which is also a Christian belief.
